Aster concolor (Eastern Silver Aster) 2ft when blooming; perfect choice for a dry area; silver, hairy foliage; purple flowers line up on the stem resembling a purple wand; striking when planted en masse or with goldenrods and fall blooming grasses. (Zone 5-9)

Aster concolor is a nice fall-blooming aster that can handle dry soil, which is mostly what I have. It is very hard to locate commercially but Mail Order Natives had it and I ordered two. I received them within a few days of ordering, and they were big, bushy, multi-stemmed gallon plants that actually had some flowers already showing. The packing was excellent and the plants were full-size, untrimmed, over 2 feet tall. The postage is relatively expensive but they ship a carefully-packed, full-size plant, and the relatively low cost of the plant makes up for it. Mail Order Natives has never disappointed me in the more than 15 years I have ordered from them.
