Quercus phellos (Willow Oak) 

  • Deciduous
  • Bark: smooth gray
  • Leaves: resemble leaves of a willow tree, up to 5 inches long, slender linear, narrowly oblong, sometimes wavy margins, bright-dark green
  • Fall color: yellow to light brown
  • Produces spherical acorns
  • Tree size: up to 70 feet tall and 50 feet wide 
  • Native in Eastern United States
  • Hardy to zones 6-9
  • Use: Excellent landscape tree, good for wildlife

    This willow oak was surprisingly big, and even if it wasn’t that tall, it’s a great starter tree.
