Description

Rhododendron canescens 'Chocolate Drop' was chosen from thousands of seedlings due to new growth emerging a very unusual bright chocolate red, similar to a red Japanese maple,  which persists until mid-summer when the foliage turns olive green. The flowers are fragrant pink which are enhanced by the foliage color.

    This selection has been a bit difficult to find, but was worth the search as an addition to my native azalea collection. I will be converting a sandy/silty ridge on our farm into an azalea showcase, with the different bloom times, colors, flower and foliar textures, and in this case even the color contrast of the flowers and emerging leaves providing a near-infinite palette of possibility!
