Nyssa ogeche (Ogechee Tupelo/White Tupelo)
Female trees bear oblong fruit that are edible. Found in swamps but does well on drier sites. Very important tree in the Florida honey industry. Tupelo honey is very mild and light in color and brings a premium price. Since Tupelo trees are found in Florida swamps, beekeepers actually put their hives on floating platforms to take full advantage of the Tupelo blooms. We have a grove of Nyssa ogeche on our land that we planted on a dry site, and they are thriving. This fall, a beekeeper brought honeybee hives to our grove for honey production. We are very excited to see the honey making process in action!
